Elizabeth Joan Cook, 91, of Leavenworth, died, Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehab.

Elizabeth Joan Cook, 91, of Leavenworth, died, Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehab. She was born Nov. 21, 1926, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Charles and Regina (Thayer) Schindling.
Joan attended the University of Kansas where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Theta Sigma Phi, honorary Journalism sorority. Joan received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism, a Master of English Education Degree and a Teacher’s Certificate from St. Mary’s College.
After college she was Associate Editor of a trade magazine and won the “Cy Fraley Award for Clear and Concise Writing”. Joan taught English at East Junior High School, Leavenworth High School and Composition at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
On June 10, 1950, Joan married Reginald F. Cook. He preceded her in death Oct. 2, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Jane Holliman; and two brothers, Richard Schindling and Robert Schindling.
Joan is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Ben) Farrar of Rock Island, Illinois; three sons, Charles (Candace) Cook of Shiloh, Illinois, Richard (Ann) Cook of Houston, Texas, and Jeff (Cynthia) Cook of The Woodlands, Texas; nine grandchildren, Amy, Jessica, Matthew, Michael, Nathan, Eileen, Erika, Elliott and Anna; and one great-grandchild, Sebastian.
Joan was a member of the Whittier Club, the Saturday Club, Chapter EN of PEO, DAR, St. Mary’s Women’s Auxiliary, St. John’s Guild and the Patrons of Leavenworth Library Board.
She enjoyed her family, traveling, reading and playing bridge.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday March 21, 2018, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Leavenworth County Historical Society: Reclaiming History Project” or St. Vincent’s Clinic.
