Melvin L. Blankenship, 91, of Kansas City, Kansas, died, Thursday, June 7, 2018, at The Piper Assisted Living. He was born March 4, 1927, in Robinson, Kansas, the son of Orvil and Hatti (Hedrick) Blankenship.
On March 3, 1947, Melvin married Patricia Lee Gaston at her parents’ home in Kansas City, Kansas. Together they raised three sons and enjoyed five grandchildren. Patsy preceded him in death in 1994. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his oldest son, Michael; and youngest grandson, Clinton Shane Blankenship. Melvin is survived by two sons, Patrick (Nancy) and Kelly (Donna); a daughter-in-law, Alice; four grandchildren, Storme, Brandy, Heather and Zachary; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Lou served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also worked as a meat department manager for Milgram’s Grocery for 41 years.
On Nov. 23, 1996, Lou married Sidney McCue. She preceded him in death in 2012. Melvin is also survived by Sidney’s daughter, Shawn McCue; her granddaughters, Ryann and Brandy; and two great-grandchildren.
The family is thankful to The Piper family for the kindness and support to Lou and to the compassionate tender care from The Catholic Community Hospice.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Church, with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Hubbel Hill Cemetery in Tonganoxie, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to Catholic Community Hospice (9740 W. 87th St., Overland Park, KS, 66212).
