Martha Jean Towns, 81 of Leavenworth passed away surrounded by family on August 21st, 2010 at the University of Kansas Medical Center..
Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, August 26th, 2010 at Belden Larkin Funeral Home with the Rev. George Bertels officiating.
Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM and a Rosary at 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Leavenworth National Cemetery at 11:00 AM.
Martha was born March 6th, 1929 in Paola, Kansas the daughter of Fred Lee and Emma Lou (Dillard) Wilhoite.
Martha attended Paola Public Schools and Ursuline Academy. In 1953, she received her certificate of Nursing from Ft. Scott Sisters of Mercy. During her career as a registered nurse, she was the Assistant Director of Nurses at the Larned State Hospital and a Staff and Head Psychiatric Nurse at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center. She retired in 1996 after thirty years of dedicated service to our nation's veterans.
She was a member Les Novelettes and the Kansas State Nurses Association.
She is survived by her son; Edward Holt Towns, Jr. and his wife Tonya of Austin, Texas, one daughter, Ursula J. Towns of Lewisville, Texas. Her sisters, Venice Greenwood of Leavenworth, Mamie Anderson of Indianapolis, Roberta Young and her husband James of Pueblo, Co, and Myrna Bernard of Hutchison, Kansas; two brothers; Noble Wilhoite of Paola, Ks and Delco Wilhoite of Winslow, Arizona; seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild, a brother in law George Towns, sister in law's Hazel Wilhoite, Gee Gee Wilhoite, Wanda Wilhoite, Ella Towns, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers; Fred Lee, Jesse, Robert, and Ernest Wilhoite.
