To the editor:

Citizens of Leavenworth County, have you had an opportunity to sign the Give Me Five petition?

The goal is to place a yes/no question on the ballot in November to expand the Leavenworth County Commission from three to five commissioners. As our county grows it’s time to expand our representation. Please stop by our booth at the Leavenworth Farmers Market on Saturday to add your name to thousands who have already signed.

If you are still wondering why this is an important issue, please consider the following. Presently, two commissioners are managing our $58 million per year budget. This is too much money and too much power for just two commissioners. Why two you ask? It is rare that the three of them agree on funding issues, and that isn’t good enough.

Please take a moment and check your recent 2018 appraisal, mailed to your home address in March. Our property taxes are so high, because we are the main source of income for our county. I have spoken with some people who, because they live within city limits, do not think they are contributing at the county level. We are all contributing to the county, and with the growth in the south and western areas of the county, it’s time that we vote to have a more equitable representation.

Please stop by and visit with us on Saturday. We will be there from 8 a.m. until noon.
