In a recent editorial in the big-city paper, the Jan. 7 attack on the office of the French magazine Charlie Hebdo was rightfully characterized as an attack against free speech everywhere. I want to go one step further, however.

In 2013 I voted for the state budget, Senate Bill 171. I voted against the 2014 budget. These are the only budget bills on which I have voted. Neither bill reduced the funding for K-12 education.

I appreciated Mike Reilly's letter to the editor and the Leavenworth County Commissioners' letter explaining the need for the income provided by the proposed extension of the 1 percent sales tax in Leavenworth County.

On the county's 20-year sales tax ballot question we will not see one word about the $140 million which is the actual amount at issue we will vote on in this election.
