To the editor:
National Assisted Living Week starts Sunday, September 11. It shares the date with two other very important events—the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and Grandparents’ Day.

As proud Americans and active members of our communities, the residents of our assisted living homes are a reminder of the patriotism, family devotion and work ethic that we sometimes feel are missing in America today. It’s no wonder they are so treasured by the tireless nurses, nurse’s aides, cooks, housekeepers and office staff who care for them every day, striving to make this home, which may be their last, as loving and comfortable a place as it can possibly be.

“Forever Proud” is the theme of this year’s National Assisted Living Week. Established by the National Center for Assisted Living in 1995, it’s an opportunity to celebrate the lives of those residents we care for. The theme is not just about pride in our nation, which this “Greatest Generation” certainly has. It‘s also about pride in a life of work well done. Pride in children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for whom they paved the way to a life of greater opportunity. Pride in their local community, their friends, their church, their neighborhood. Pride in the skills they have and are still to learn. Pride in a lifetime of accomplishments. Pride in the values they have to teach the rest of us, still wanting to make this world better before they leave it.
If you have a friend, neighbor or family member in an assisted living home, please stop by to see them the week of Sept. 11 and any other week that you can manage it. Many activities are planned, so they may be very busy, but you’ll be glad you did. Our assisted living and nursing home residents are national treasures. Tell them that you, too, are “Forever Proud” of what they’ve done for us.
