Co-director, Leavenworth Assistance Center

To the editor:
How to thank so many people without missing someone is a challenge I am facing, so I’m asking the Leavenworth Times to intervene on my behalf.
As many of the Times readers know, the Leavenworth Assistance Center is an all volunteer work force whose primary mission is to help the unemployed or “economically challenged” Leavenworth citizens with food assistance. We receive no financial help from any federal, state, count or city government, yet we somehow manage to provide food to nearly 5,000 needy residents annually. As far as we know, we are the only all-volunteer organization in Leavenworth County who handles this kind of volume.

We are able to do it because Leavenworth has several caring residents, churches and businesses who donate cash, which allows us to purchase thousands and thousands of dollars of food we give away throughout the year. Similarly, many Leavenworth citizens also donate clothing, furniture and other household items to our thrift store whose revenue from the sale of these items is also used to purchase food.

We also have an outstanding quilt shop and its reputation for quality work extends far beyond county lines. The revenue from quilting work and the sale of fabric, notions and other quilt-related goods goes for the same cause.
So, my purpose in writing is to thank all the contributors because without them, we wouldn’t be here and to apologize if I or any of us working at the center has failed to individually do so.

Leavenworth County can be justly proud of its many “silent” donors who, without fanfare, donate cash or products to help our less-fortunate citizens.
Hunger is not seasonal though so we are receptive to donations throughout the year and are always in need of good, reliable volunteers.
Thank you again to our many donors and our volunteers and board of directors who unselfishly give their time to help others.
