To the editor:
I would like to offer a strong opposition to the Leavenworth Preservation Commission.
First, I would like to establish my right to present an opinion in opposition. I have been a resident of this city since 1981. I have lived in a home during this time that has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977. The renovation and maintenance of the property has been with no help from the government, local, state or national, until 2009 when a 25 percent state tax credit for painting was accepted. During these many years Dorothy Lee and I have opened the home to the general public uncountable number of times.
The East Middle School building was purchased by the First United Methodist Church with the understanding at the time of purchase that the building would be torn down and a parking lot made on this site.
The building does not have historical value. I am a member of the Kansas Preservation Alliance and I do not believe that there is any reason to preserve this useless structure. The city does not want to maintain an empty building; the Kansas Preservation Alliance cannot. It has no function in our world today. The space can be used. Tear it down!!
