Next week marks the second round of parent-teacher conferences for students in the Leavenworth School District this year.
Maintaining an open and productive relationship with your child’s teacher is crucial to effectively supporting your child’s academic achievement. It is extremely important for every one of our students to understand that their school and family are working as a team on their behalf.
Parent-teacher conferences offer an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between home and school and fully support your student’s academic achievement. The following is the schedule for spring 2012 parent-teacher conferences:
Warren Middle School and Leavenworth High School
Wednesday, February 15
4:15 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.
Thursday, February 16, 2012
9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
12 p.m. - 5 p.m.
All Elementary Schools and West Intermediate School
Thursday, February 16
9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
12:00 p.m. - 4 p.m.
5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Parents should take the following steps to ensure a productive meeting with their child’s teacher.
Before the conference – It is important to understand your child’s perspective of how things are going at school. This goes beyond the daily “what did you learn today?” exchange. Talk to your student about their education on a regular basis, asking questions such as:
- What do you like best about school?
- What do you like least about school?
- Are there any problems you’d like to talk about?
- Do you have any questions you’d like me to ask your teacher?
- It is best to go into conferences with a plan of things you’d like to discuss with your child’s teacher. Prepare a list of questions in advance, such as the following:
- What are my child’s strengths?
- In what areas could my child improve?
- How is my child’s behavior in the classroom?
- Is my child completing their assignments on time?
- What can I do to help my child succeed in school?
During the conference – Our teachers are passionate about providing their students with the best possible education. They want to see your child succeed just as much you do. Listen carefully to any suggestions the teacher might share that could benefit your child’s learning. If any areas of concern are identified, partner with your child’s teacher to develop an action plan. The plan should include specific goals and objectives for the student to meet and ways both you and your child’s teacher can help your child reach them.

Additionally, take a few minutes to complete the family engagement survey that will be available. Your feedback is very much appreciated and will help our schools strengthen the partnerships with our students’ families.
After the conference – Don’t wait for the next round of parent-teacher conferences to communicate with your child’s teacher to discuss your student’s progress. It is important to maintain an open line of communication between the school and home. Share any information about your child’s behavior and home life that might affect their ability to focus in the classroom. Also, don’t be too hard on your student if you receive an unfavorable report at the conference. Take time to process the information and explore ways to be an active and enthusiastic participant in your child’s education.
Please plan to attend your child’s parent-teacher conference and send a positive message to your child about the importance of school and education.
