Each year Catholic Schools around the nation celebrate Catholic Schools Week the last week in January. Xavier and Immaculata Schools will host Open House events for prospective families Sunday after Masses at local Catholic Churches.
A Eucharistic Celebration is the highlight of the week, with all students in kindergarten through high school participating, as well as local clergy, parishioners and alumni. There are many other events, both community service and fun events that honor and thank people who support our Catholic schools: priests, sisters, local community businesses, parishes, volunteers, teachers and students. Our schools are stronger because of all the support we receive from many different groups and individuals, and we are very grateful!
It is hard to believe that we have been in our new school at 541 Muncie Rd. for a full semester. Our consolidation for the most part has been a wonderful experience for the children. This year has not been without its challenges, but we truly believe that the sacrifices that are being made today in order to adjust to our new home will pay off in many ways in the future of our school as well as the future of our students.
An article that was recently published in Education Week talked about a study that was done as a part of a program on Education Policy and Governance Working Papers at Harvard University. It found that students physically moving from grade 5 into middle school show a “sharp drop” in math and language arts achievement in the transition years and can plague them as far out as 10th grade, even risking their ability to graduate from high school. This study was very interesting to me and truly supports the K through 8 models that we have achieved here in The Leavenworth Catholic Schools.
The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” The theme expresses three priorities that make Catholic schools stand out from other educational institutions. Children learn about faith—not just basic Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. They concentrate on academics, which in Catholic schools are held to the highest standards, so they can reach their highest potential. They practice service – giving time, talent and effort to help others – as an expression of both faith and good citizenship. This combined focus on faith, academics and service prepares students for full and meaningful lives.
Catholic Schools have served the Leavenworth area for more than 150 years, and have always been offered as an educational choice for any family in this area. Today Xavier and Immaculata are part of the fabric of our community. With the help of our many supporters, Xavier and Immaculata Schools have a bright future ahead.
All of us at the Leavenworth Catholic Schools want to say THANK YOU to the Leavenworth Community for your past and future support.
We appreciate and look forward to the opportunity in the coming months to share the progress of our “For The Next 150 Years…a Campaign for Catholic Education in Leavenworth County” as we continue to work towards our construction goals of a new gymnasium and cafeteria.
