The Leavenworth Bicycle Club exists to promote and support bicycling primarily in Leavenworth County. We try to include every style of bicycling. So, you should feel welcome if you are a mountain biker, roadie, spinner, time trialer, psychocross (cyclcocross) racer, commuter, criterium racer, multiple-day rider, bike camper, etc.
Presently, our greatest numbers are weekend riders who ride both trail bikes and road bikes. Trail bikes could be mountain bikes or hybrids and on paved trails will include road bikes. Our membership ranges in age from the young to those with years of experience.
Our weekend rides are conducted on a variety of routes which are within not too much distance of Leavenworth, although a number of them are either in Missouri or out of the county. For some reason, there are many more opportunities to ride safely on trails elsewhere and we find that to be a shame since we would prefer to ride closer to home and to spend money locally.
We offer a free membership to anyone who purchases any bike, new or used, youth or adult, from the one professional bike shop in the county, that is, the Santa Fe Trails Bike & Coffee Shop. We are pretty sure that if you are buying from a professional shop that you are pretty serious about riding.
We also are now offering to pay the United States Cycling Association Youth Racing License fee for any Leavenworth County youths. To be eligible, you must be a paid member of our club and also be accepted to ride with the Santa Fe Trails Racing Team.
As a member of the team, one of about 30-something in Kansas, you can participate in high-quality training conducted by Brendan Sheehan from the bike shop and you can race in a fairly large number of races throughout the year. In fact, as a member of the team, Brendan will often pick up the registration fees for the first regular criterium series in our region which is called the Spring Fling and is conducted near Lawrence.
Brendan usually picks up the registration fee for any racing team member for the Spring Fling, including adults, and that is an example of the kind of support that you can often get from a local business. That is one reason that I like to support our local businesses by buying local.
As for the youth racing, Brendan tells me that we already have our first youth racer from Leavenworth and I hope that he can inspire many other youths to join the team. That is one reason that the bike club conducts an annual money ride. We try to raise enough funds to be able to support bicycling in some form or another during the year.

Besides the youth licenses, we buy the placement medals for the regular kids’ racing series in the summer at Warren Middle School. By popular demand, Brendan has expanded the series to five evenings in the summer. We have also set a date for the money ride and are now conducting committee meetings to pull it all together for the Buffalo Bill Weekend in September.
I highly encourage any bicycle rider to join our club, especially if you want to help promote and support bicycling in our local area. Bicycling is a lifetime activity that will help you stay in shape.
