Going on a rant after the Chiefs lose to the Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium is starting to become an annual event.
Regardless of whether you root for the Chiefs or the Raiders or the Jaguars or whoever, though, it would be hard not to complain about that game if you saw it. Oakland and Kansas City seem to be capable of putting forth the grossest displays of football ineptitude seen in the NFL today, so what do you think happens when you put them on the same field at the same time?
It’s bad enough to make Hank Stram roll over in his grave. Maybe he can just go ahead and haunt Al Davis at night while he’s at it.
So, in honor of such a pathetic game, I’ve decided to write a pathetic column to put forth my observations of it. Here goes ... (this is going to be terrible):
— It’s only fitting in a game like this for one team to completely outplay the other and still lose. The Chiefs outgained Oakland 409-166, racked up 25 first downs to the Raiders’ 11, and held the ball for more than 38 of the game’s 60 minutes. KC had solid gains of 4.6 yards per rush and 5.8 yards per pass play — Oakland had a mere 2.7 yards per rush and 3.8 yards per pass play. So with such huge differences on a play-by-play basis, how is it even possible that the Chiefs lost? Is it because Oakland averaged a ridiculous 56.9 yards per punt and can make 54-yard field goals routine? That certainly bailed them out in some spots, but anyone who watched the game knows exactly the real difference was.
