Lady Pioneers powerlifting repeats at Augusta

The Pioneer powerlifters loaded the bus at 4 a.m. Saturday to make the trip to Augusta, Kan., for their second annual powerlifting invitational.

For the second year in a row, Leavenworth claimed the girls’ team championship at the meet.

In the 114 weight class, Maggie Lee took home two medals, including another gold for her weight class and for best clean with a personal-record lift of 145 pounds. At 123, Tabitha Larkin and Laura Payne took fifth and sixth, respectively, both adding team points for the championship.

In the 132 class, Janay Johnson once again put on a dominant performance, taking home gold and winning all three best lift medals. This included a personal record in the clean, where Johnson exploded up and under 175 pounds, the best ever by a female at Leavenworth High School.

She also added to her trophy case by taking the best lifter award for girls 140 pounds and below, given for the overall strongest pound-for-pound athlete.
In the 140 class, Ashtin Sanders took sixth in only her second meet, once again boosting the team total. At 148, Lacie Thornton took home a bronze medal and Amelia Cribb took fifth to cushion the team’s score. Attending her first high school powerlifting meet, Gwendolyn Davis took bronze at 165, fending off fourth place by a solid 25 pounds.

The Pioneer girls owned the 181 class as well, placing Hunter Anne Postier as champion for her second meet in a row. Postier also took best squat and best clean honors. Maddy Minchew joined her for third place. Hunter Anne also took the best lifter award in the 148 plus weight classes, ensuring that both trophies in the girls’ division came home with the Pioneers.

In the girls PWT class, Layne Broeker, just a sophomore, took silver on the strength of her best clean at 140 pounds.

In boys’ freshmen and sophomore action, Jarred Donnelson turned in a repeat gold medal performance in the 198-pound class after doing the same at Basehor-Linwood earlier this year. Donnelson also took a best bench medal with a 275 pound attempt. In the 220 class, Mike Stratton took his first medal of the year with a silver and Kris Messer finished third. Also competing for the

Pioneers in this division were freshmen Gunnar Freeman and Jerrian Wilson in 132, Kole Runyan and Jarod Weber in 148 and Isaiah Ross in 165, who was just edged out of medal contention by a slim five pounds.

In the boys’ junior and senior division, the Pioneers had Austin McDaniel and Chris McLeod competing at 220. McDaniel brought home the bronze in the division. In the 242 class, Enrique Gonzalez-Garcia, fresh from knee surgery after tearing his ACL during football season, competed in bench press only and still managed to take home the best lift in this category, hoisting 285 pounds.

Up next for the Pioneer powerlifters is a trip to Kearney, Mo. on March 3.
