In what has become an annual holiday among college football fans, Wednesday marked the official national signing day for the 2012 high school senior class.

Across the nation amateur football players put ink to paper announcing what college they planned on playing at next year, and Lansing was no different. Five Lions signed letters of intent in front of a large crowd of family, friends and coaches outside the Lansing High School gymnasium.

“Since I was a little kid I have always dreamed of this,” said former Lansing running back Nick Hughes, who signed with the United States Air Force Academy. “I dreamed of playing Division I football and I have a long line of military in my family so it was the perfect fit.”

Hughes, who was a first team all-Leavenworth County running back and second team all-Kaw Valley League selection, finished this past fall with 842 total yards, six total touchdowns and 18 catches for 281 yards.

Joining the halfback was Mike Miller, who officially signed with Washburn University. The offensive and defensive linemen claimed a first team spot on both the county and KVL post season honors list.

“I just really liked the coaches, the players and the facilities at Washburn,” Miller said. “When I went on my visit, it really sealed it for me.”

Teammates James Howey, a second team KVL interior lineman, and linebacker/tight-end Cameron Decker each decided to continue their playing careers at Highland Community College. Decker collected 18 catches for three touchdowns this past season and recorded 26 tackles.

Rounding out the Lansing signees was Logan Mance, a wide receiver and defensive back that will play at Independence Community College next season.
