The University of Saint Mary men used lights-out shooting from beyond the arc to earn an 88-72 win at Benedictine College Monday. The win makes USM 7-1 on the year and extends the Spire winning streak to six games.
Saint Mary hit 15-of-18 3-point attempts in Monday’s matchup with the Ravens, leaning on that scoring to take a lead early in the second half after playing to a 36-36 tie in the first half.
USM hit its first three shots from beyond the arc in the second half, building a nine-point, 47-38 lead four minutes into the period. The Spire posts then put in some work, running the floor to beat the Ravens to the paint and establish an 11-point lead, 52-41, with transition baskets by Davis and Marc McGrory.
USM would stretch the lead to as many as 20 points, controlling play the entire second half en route to the win.
The Spires had trailed for the first 14 minutes of the game until Reggie Davis drove the lane for a 26-25 lead with 5:40 before halftime.
USM finished the game 83 percent from 3-point range. Jordan Wilcox led the scoring with 19 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and 7-for-7 shooting from the free-throw line. Brandon Dougherty and Manuel Barnes each scored 13 in the contest. Dougherty hit 2-of-3 3-point attempts in a 5-for-11 night from the field while Barnes was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc while making 4-of-6 field goals.
Hall, Kevin Harvey and Chris Combs all hit 2-of-2 3s, Harvey finishing with eight points, Hall seven and Combs six. Greenberg added eight points and Justin Crutchfield added five. McGrory and Davis scored five and four points, respectively, in the win.
Davis led the team with eight rebounds and Dougherty had a team-best four assists.
