To prepare for its upcoming league tournament, the Lansing wrestling team traveled to Bonner Springs Thursday for a final tune-up.

Facing the host school first, Lansing pulled out a 41-38 victory over Bonner before falling to Tonganoxie 40-31.

“All the kids wrestled really tough tonight and I was really happy with that,” Lansing coach Ron Averill said. “We pulled out the win against Bonner but just didn’t have enough points against Tonganoxie. Overall, it was a good night and now we can just concentrate on our upcoming league tournament.”

The highlights against Bonner started with Clayton Bogner, who recorded a pin win at 138. Litton VanDerWerff at 195 and Daniel Singletary at 220 also nailed down pins while Caleb Ward won by a tech fall in the 170 pound match. Michael Olsen at 126 and Bo Pursel at 132 both received open victories.

“Caleb has just been progressing throughout the year and it’s really starting to come around,” Averill said. “Daniel was the one who secured the win with his pin so that was nice to see.”

Versus Tonganoxie, Pursel won by pin, as did VanDerWerff and Andrew Walter did too at 145. Will Dyson was able to grind out a 5-4 victory at 150 and Olsen had a huge 22-10 win as well.

“Michael put on a take down clinic,” the Lions coach said. “He had 11 take downs in his win and just was overpowering.”
