The Lansing girls’ basketball team dug itself too big of a hole Friday night against Mill Valley and while it fought back in the second half, the deficit proved too much.
The Lady Lions fell behind 21-6 at half time against the Jaguars and eventually lost 37-26 to its visitors.
“We had 19 turnovers in the first half,” Lansing coach Keith Andrews said. “That built a huge hole for us to climb out of and though we played hard in the second, we couldn’t do it.”
Ultimately, it was the first quarter that doomed the Lady Lions. The squad mustered just two points while its visitors put up 14. The second quarter was much more even as Lansing held Mill Valley to seven points, but only could put in four of its own and thus faced a 21-6 disadvantage at half.
In the third quarter, the Lansing team looked much better and tripled its overall point total to 18 while cutting its deficit to seven. Yet, in the fourth and final period, the Lady Lions couldn’t keep the rally going and suffered the 11-point home loss.
“We came out in the second half and fought hard and I was pleased with that,” Andrews said. “It’s just that we keep digging ourselves into holes early in games and you can tell the confidence gets shaken. We need to break that cycle.”
Morgan Bromell led the Lady Lions in scoring with eight points, followed by Gabby Hacker’s six. Shelby Ogden and Mikayla Zielinski each had four a piece while Emma Zeck and Maggie Hornick contributed two each.
Lansing travels to Bonner Springs on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game.
