The city of Leavenworth will be holding its 36th annual Leavenworth Labor Day Tennis Tournament from Saturday Aug. 30 through Monday Sept. 1.
Each player may participate in up to three of the seventeen divisions of competition, which include open events as well as age-specific events for both men and women.
This year’s tournament will add to an already proud history for the event. The champions of the men’s open singles tournament alone have represented seven states since the inaugural event in 1973.
In addition, players from six foreign countries, including Poland, Peru, Mexico, Spain, Nigeria and Yugoslavia, have taken home the men’s open singles title. Runners-up have also come from Sweden, Portugal and, most recently in 2007, India.
Those not competing in the open singles and doubles for men or women have other options as well. Girls 18 years and under may compete in their own singles tournament, as well as boys 18 and under, 16 and under, and 14 and under. Boys 18 and under will also have a doubles tournament.
Women age 35 and over will have their own singles tournament, and men will have both singles and doubles at that age division. Other men’s events will include singles for age 45 and over, doubles for 50 and over, and singles for 55 and over.
Finally, mixed doubles and parent/child doubles for any combination of fathers, sons, mothers and daughters will be held.
All competitors must report to the David Brewer Tennis Courts at 18th and Ottawa. Open singles play will begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 30. All other singles divisions begin at 8:30 a.m. Doubles competitors are to report at 1:30 p.m.
Matches will also be held at the Leavenworth High School Tennis Courts at 10th Ave. and Halderman, as well as the Cody Park Courts at Shrine Park and Limit.
The entry deadline is Wednesday Aug. 27. Telephone entries will not be accepted, but entries may be mailed to Labor Day Tennis Tournament, Leavenworth Parks and Community Activities Department, 123 S. Esplande, Leavenworth, KS 66048.
The singles fee is $14 per person, per event. Doubles teams must pay $20 per team, per event. The fees will furnish tennis balls for each match, as well as a Saturday afternoon picnic at David Brewer Park. Guests are welcome for an additional $5.
