Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams for the University of Saint Mary took care of business Saturday at Bethany College.

The men utilized its usual shooting barrage to run over its hosts 89-70, while the Lady Spires clamped down defensively in the second half of its contest to win 59-48.

For the Saint Mary men, the squad used a pair of 43 percent clips from both the field and from beyond the 3-point arc to sink the Swedes by 19. At half, the Spires had built up a 16-point advantage, 51-35, before cruising to the win with a 38-35 effort in the second half.

Four USM players recorded double-digit point totals, the largest coming from Chip Schneider with 16. JEB Greenberg added 15 while both Reggie Davis and Kevin Harvey contributed 14. Greenberg also led the team in rebounds with nine and Brandon Dougherty had a team high four assists.

Saint Mary, 13-3 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and still in sole possession of the league’s second top spot, will host Bethel, 3-13, Thursday at 8 p.m.

In the women’s game, the Lady Spires found themselves trailing 31-28 at half before outscoring the Lady Swedes 31-17 in the second half for the double-digit win. A renewed defensive effort and an aggressive offensive attack that led to 32 free throws, of which the team made 23, made the comeback possible.

Kendra Mattox was the squad’s high point-getter with 16, Jasmine Johnson and Michelle Chrisman throwing in 12 behind her. Johnson recorded a double-double when she snatched a team-high 13 rebounds and also led USM in assists with six.

Saint Mary, 5-11 in the KCAC, will welcome Bethel Thursday at 6 p.m.
