Lansing, Kan. -

The post-season awards have come rolling in by the bunches for Lansing’s boys’ soccer team after they claimed their first regional championship since 2005 and moved on to the 5A state quarterfinals this year.

Lansing had three players named to the All-Kaw Valley League first team, and only Piper’s four selections to the first team outnumbered the Lions. Their five total All-KVL honorees matched Piper and trailed only league champion Mill Valley, who had seven. The other seven teams in the KVL all had fewer first team and total selections than Lansing.

In addition, the Lions landed four players on the all-region teams and two on the all-state teams, senior Clayton Hall and junior Philip Nelson.

Hall was voted first team on the all-state roster. One of Lansing’s team captains, he was also first team All-KVL and first team all-region at the midfield position. In the Lions’ 18 games, Hall scored nine goals, including two game-winners in overtime, and added four assists for a total of 22 points. He was also named all-academic first team.

Nelson was first team All-KVL and first team all-region at forward in addition to being second-team all-state. He led the Lions in scoring with 31 points on 13 goals and five assists for the season.

Sophomore Chris Rathjen made second team all-region after scoring eight goals. Along with his five assists, Rathjen finished the year with 21 points. He also was named distinguished all-academic.

Senior Hawkins Hall also was voted second team all-region as a defenseman. In addition, the team captain was an honorable mention All-KVL defenseman as he helped anchor a defense that allowed only 2.22 goals per game (only 1.88 per game before their quarterfinal loss).

That defense was also spearheaded by junior Gage Thackston, who was named a first team All-KVL defenseman. He also largely handled the free kick duties for Lansing and finished the year with five assists. Thackston and Nelson were two of only three juniors in the KVL to make first team all-league in soccer.

Sophomore Josh Wepking was also voted the second team All-KVL goalkeeper. He averaged over eight saves per game and helped Lansing record five shutouts, two of which came in the regional rounds of the state playoffs to complete a three game streak dating back to the regular season where the Lions blanked their opponents each time. Wepking was the only sophomore to make either first or second team All-KVL in soccer.
