The Lansing girls earned a 70-58 win over Turner on Friday night, showing they had enough offensive power to overcome a hot shooting night by the host Golden Bears. Although Turner’s girls hit five 3-pointers on the night, the Lady Lions used a balanced attack with four players in double figures to earn the win.

After an off-night offensively limited the Lions to just 35 points in their last outing, head coach Keith Andrews said he was happy to see his squad have such an effective night on the offensive end.

“I was pleased with the offensive performance,” Andrews said. “We were able to move the ball well against their zone and hit open people. ... We had good balance, everyone did a good job hitting open shots when the ball came to them.”

Lansing got a team-high 14 points from Amy Briggs and Allison Ewing, Katie Delich and Katelyn Griffen each added 12 points. Abbey Lozenski just must double digits with nine points, including two 3-pointers, and Kiersten Kirkendoll chipped in six points. Three points by Jenna Hoing and two from Gabby Hacker rounded out the Lions’ scoring in the win.

“Abbey (Lozenski) hit some big shots for us,” Andrews said. “And our inside people, Delich and Ewing, did a goodjob inside.”

Andrews said the one offensive category where his squad struggled was at the free-throw line, the Lions hitting just 8-for-21 shots from the line. Turner hit 7-of-12 attempt from the free-throw line on the night.

A big night rebounding the ball also helped the Lions stave off the Bears’ attack.

“They just did a real nice job on the boards,” Andrews said.

Both Ewing and Delich had double-doubles on the night, Ewing pulling down 12 rebounds to go with her 12 points while Delich added 10 boards to her 12-point effort on the night. Griffen had eight rebounds for the Lansing girls and Hoing had seven.

Despite the 58 points the Turner girls were able to score, Andrews said his girls had a pretty solid night defensively as well.

“We actually didn’t play bad defense,” the Lions’ coach said. “They just hit shots. We have to work on getting people further out beyond their comfort range.”

Briggs grabbed five steals on the night, and the senior also had five assists.

The No. 8 rated Lady Lions are now 12-2 overall on the season and remained unbeaten in the Kaw Valley League with Friday’s win. Tuesday Lansing has another road test, taking on conference foe Bishop Ward at 7:30 p.m. Bishop Ward brings a 9-5 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the KVL into Tuesday’s contest.
