An inspired start for the Immaculata girls’ basketball team proved to be the difference Thursday.

Competing against Doniphan West in the Riverside Invitational, the Lady Raiders held its opponent to just five points while blitzing them for 14 in the opening period. From there, Imac held server through the remaining three quarters to win 44-36.

“Last time we played them we started out in a zone,” Lady Raider coach Terry Jordan said. “Today we started out in full-court man defense and just brought the pressure from the beginning.”

Turnovers led to easy baskets and the Immaculata advantage soon became nearly double digits. In the second quarter, the game slowed down as each team could only muster six points, leaving the halftime score at 20-11.

The third saw the contest pick back up and though the Raiders won the quarter 14-13, foul trouble began to mount. In the fourth, that problem boiled over as Immaculata’s leading scorer Brittany Simek was saddled with her fourth foul early.
Yet the depth of the Imac squad would validate its victory.

“Brittany got into foul trouble so here came the freshmen and they did a good job,” Jordan said. “The four freshmen are really doing a phenomenal job for us filling some holes and picking up the slack. They are well-seasoned enough now that I know they will go in there and do a good job.”

With his senior forward out, underclassmen Grace Parker, Katie Gillespie, Ellie Wolk and Mary Kate Wolken performed well enabling Imac to withstand Doniphan’s rally. Senior guard Liz Todd then sank free throws down the stretch to guarantee the win.

Simek led the team in scoring with 20, followed by Todd’s 10 and Parker’s four. Gillespie also added four, Lainey Bell pitched in three while Mary Kate Metivier contributed two and Wolken had one.

Immaculata will play in the tournament’s consolation game on Saturday against Maur Hill-Prep Mount Academy at noon.
