The U14 Blue Jays received their first place trophies this past Tuesday night at the WyCo Sports Complex. The Blue Jays went undefeated in the 13-14 year old division of the WyCo League. The Blue Jays separated themselves from the field, scoring more than 100 runs and allowing only 12, and all in only 12 games of the league season.
“This is just a great way for these boys to end their season and an era, of sorts” coach Rob Miller said, recalling that most of these same players earned first place in the U12 WyCo League two years ago, also going undefeated while scoring well over 120 runs giving up only nine.
“We used our league games to work everyone out at different positions and fine-tune our game for our tournaments,” coach Adam Zink said. “With our second-place finish in the World Series, the work really paid off.”
It was a Leavenworth County sweep, as the Goosetown Reds from Lansing took the second place prize in the league.
“They only lost one game ... to us” coach Joe Allison said. “We beat them 2-1, and it was the best game all year in league play. They improved throughout the year, and we made each other better baseball teams. My hat is off to them” he said.
This is the last year this group of players will play at WyCo, as most of them will be too old next summer.
“Most of the boys will play high school ball together, and they may even be playing together or against one another in Legion ball or on other USSSA teams next year,” Allison said. “We also have a great young team coming up that took second in the U11 division, so WyCo hasn’t heard the last of the Leavenworth Blue Jays.”
