In the game’s final moments Friday, the Leavenworth girls’ basketball team had a chance to push its contest with host Olathe North into overtime.
Unfortunately for the Lady Pioneers, the inbounds play drawn up by head coach Jessica Fullen couldn’t be executed and the last seconds melted off the clock. Leavenworth lost 44-41 to the Lady Eagles.
“We just didn’t execute that final play,” Fullen said. “They went zone on us after the first half and we didn’t make very good decisions against it. We started to press them into some turnovers to get back in it and had that last inbounds play, but we didn’t execute.”
After holding a slim half time advantage of 22-19, the Lady Pioneers found themselves down seven after the third quarter due to North’s defensive scheme change.
“We didn’t get quick reversals and shot the ball too quickly against that zone,” Fullen said.
In the fourth however, Leavenworth made a charge thanks in large part to its full court press that delivered some easy baskets. Despite the rally though, the effort came up just short when the squad couldn’t find the equalizer in the game’s final seconds.
Tashia Jones led the team in scoring with 14 points while adding 13 rebounds and six blocks. Rachel Blackburn put in 10 points and snatched 13 rebounds and four steals. Kylah Clark, who Fullen praised for her contributions, added five points and four offensive rebounds.
Daysha Thomas had four points as well, while Rebekha Covington and Baile Wallingford had three a piece. Rashayla Mathis ended with two points, three assists and two steals.
The Lady Pioneers, 5-9 overall, will host Lawrence Free State on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
