Online voting will end at midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 20 for the “8 Wonders of Kansas Customs” contest.

Until then, people can go to www.8wonders.org and vote three times from any one e-mail address. Any paper ballots with a postmark of Oct. 20 will be counted.

Voters choose eight of the 24 finalists when they cast a ballot. Leavenworth has two entries that qualified as finalists in two seperate categories.

Leavenworth has an entry in the “Ordering a soda fountain treat” category for The Corner Pharmacy, which is one of the 37 operating soda fountains left in Kansas.

Leavenworth also has an entry in the “Riding a carousel” category for the C.W. Parker Carousel, which is one of two in the state. The other is located in Abilene.

As of October 17, 9,334 votes have been registered since voting started on Sept. 10. The contest has a chance to become only the second in the 8 Wonders series to crack 10,000 votes.

A project of the Inman-based Kansas Sampler Foundation, the purpose is to educate the world about what there is to see and do in Kansas and encourage travel in the state.

“This is a close contest and every vote counts but even more importantly it means that with every vote another person learned a little bit more about Kansas,” said Marci Penner, director of the foundation.

Previous contests have determined the 8 Wonders of Architecture, Art, Commerce and Cuisine, as well as the overall 8 Wonders of Kansas. Results can be seen at www.8wonders.org.

The Customs contest results will be announced on Friday, Oct. 23.
