For the next two years, Leavenworth County could see as many as 10,000 visitors from across the country as the host of the Kansas Sampler Festival.

On Tuesday, vendors, entertainers and exhibitors were given a primer on the festival, scheduled for May 1 and May 2, 2010, and May 7 and May 8, 2011, in Ray Miller Park in Leavenworth.

Keyta Kelly, the festival’s director, introduced both herself and Leavenworth County during the meeting at the Riverfront Community Center. Those attending the meeting also received a tour of the city, including the park that will be the site of the festival.

Though preliminary work for the festival has been taking place for more than a year, Kelly said the meeting was a sort of “official kickoff” for preparations.

She said the purpose of the Kansas Sampler Festival is to preserve Kansas culture through education and promotion of rural culture. The next two years will be the first time a whole county has collectively hosted the event.
