A Leavenworth man has been charged with kidnapping and attempted rape after he allegedly attacked a woman as she jogged Thursday in southwest Leavenworth, according to police and prosecution officials.
Christopher Goff, 38, made his first court appearance Friday. He’s scheduled to return to court Tuesday. He remains in custody at the Leavenworth County Jail, according to County Attorney Todd Thompson.
He’s been given a $100,000 bond. He could be released on only a $50,000 bond, but he would he have to be under supervision, according to Undersheriff Ron Cranor.
Goff was arrested Thursday in the area of 20th and Vilas streets.
Police were called to that area at about 9:15 a.m. Thursday for what was reported as a case of a man hitting a woman, according to Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens.
When officers arrived they found that construction workers who’d been at the new Henry Leavenworth Elementary School had surrounded the suspect and were holding him.
Goff allegedly attacked the victim as she jogged on the sidewalk on the east side of 20th street, according to Kitchens.
“This was an apparent attempted sexual assault,” Kitchens said.
The chief said there was a struggle between the woman and Goff. They victim suffered some minor abrasions.
The incident was said to have been witnessed by several people who intervened.
