Emergency personnel from various agencies spent about an hour searching the Missouri River Thursday night for a man who was believed to have jumped off the Centennial Bridge. It turned out the man had climbed to the underside of the bridge and was OK, a Leavenworth police spokesman.
At about 9:20 p.m. Thursday, a passerby reported that a man appeared to have jumped off the bridge, which spans across the river from Leavenworth to Platte County, Mo.
Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens said local law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the area. Firefighters from Kansas City, Kan., and personnel from agencies in Missouri also were involved in the search.
Kitchens said the 32-year-old man apparently had climbed over the side of the bridge to sit and think in the underside of the structure.
The police chief said the man is a member of the military, and he was turned over to military authorities.
