In preparation for next week’s Sunflower League tournament, the Leavenworth girls’ golf team has been testing itself thoroughly the last few days.
Lizzy Cline and Laura Phillips make up the Lady Pioneers squad and the two worked as one Monday in a scramble competition at Shawnee Mission North. The girls’ combined score was 38, good for third place.
“Both of them are improving,” LV coach Bob Hart said. “I’m so pleased with Laura Phillips, who never played golf before this season and is striking the ball real well.”
The duo did the same on Wednesday, competing in a scramble at St. Thomas Aquinas and earning a score of 39.
“Lizzy is progressing real well too,” Hart said. “Right now she is working on trying to find the right distance with her irons. Her goal is to make it to state and by doing these scrambles, she is able to fine tune such things.”
The Leavenworth pair has one more scramble, Tuesday at Shawnee Mission Northwest, before its league play on Wednesday in Overland Park.
