Saint Mary softball halts six-game skid with pair of home wins; USM baseball drops two on the road

What’s a better way to snap a six-game losing streak than by beating a conference foe?
Beating them twice.

On Thursday, the Saint Mary softball squad evened out its Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference mark by dispatching visiting Bethel College 5-4 and 6-5.

The victories put a halt to a six-game slide the squad had recently found itself in and improved the team's KCAC record to 2-2, 4-12 overall.

“We are now 2-2 in conference and that's a start,” USM coach Lori Lorenzen said. “Hopefully, we can get better from here and just keep moving up.”

Saint Mary will try to extend its current win streak when it travels to Southwestern College Wednesday for a doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m.

Spires' baseball stumbles at McPherson
With its third loss in its last four games, the Saint Mary baseball team currently finds itself at the bottom of the league standings.

Traveling on the road Thursday, USM lost 4-1 and 5-4 to host McPherson College, which places the Spires at 1-7 in the KCAC, 8-15 overall.

The squad will try to pull itself out of the conference cellar Saturday when it hosts McPherson beginning at 1 p.m.
