To the editor:
The 2014 CROP Hunger Walk will be held Sunday, Oct. 12 in our community. The goal is to raise awareness of our neighbors who struggle with hunger both globally and here where we live. It raises funds to help with programs that combat hunger and the causes of hunger.
There is a beautiful, five-mile route chosen this year. Backpack Buddies and Trinity House will receive local funding. The Salvation Army and the Leavenworth Assistance Center will receive the canned goods. This is a chance to ecumenically join together and do something that counts.
I was surprised last year that only 71 walkers from eight churches here participated. We lived in a North Carolina community in the autumn two years ago and were witness to the whole community coming together for this walk.
It was such a sign of love and hope and caring. Surely the Leavenworth/Lansing community cares about hunger. Get your church involved this year.  Raise some funds. Bring a can of food and come register at 1:30 p.m. at Warren Middle School. Get a colorful shirt.
The walk begins at 2p.m. If you need more information or materials, call Sue Hubert at (913) 772-6365 or (913) 775-2068. Sue, by the way, has been volunteering to lead this effort for many years. She is amazing.
