Charles Robert Wood, 81, formerly of Leavenworth, died, Friday, July 3, 2015. He was born May 25, 1934, in Lawrence, Kan., the son of Herbert and Rose (Owens) Wood.
On Feb. 14, 1954, Charles married Dixie Lou Davis. She survives him. He is also survived by a son, Mike (Jennifer) Wood of Leavenworth; a daughter-in-law, Mary Wood; a brother, Marvin Wood of Lenexa, Kan.; three grandchildren, Heather (Dominic) Britt, Scott (Abby) Wood and Natalie Wood; and a great grandson, Liam Britt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Greg Wood; and a brother, Ralph McDougal.
Charles moved to Leavenworth in May of 1957, to open his first Charley’s APCO at 4th and Kiowa. Through the years he invested in many other things besides Wood Oil Co. He owned a Coast to Coast Hardware store in Atchison, Kan. He invested in oil wells, car washes and he owned a grapefruit orchard in Texas. Charles got most of his joy from investing in the stock market.
He loved to pilot his airplane or going fishing, boating, hunting, camping and traveling in his motor home.
Charles was active in the Elks Club and the Jaycees.
In 1989, he retired and moved to Palm Springs, Calif.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2015, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
