A 50-pound tortoise that was found Tuesday in Leavenworth has been returned to its owner, the police chief said.

A passerby reported seeing the tortoise at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 1600 block of Spruce Street. The tortoise appeared to be attempting to cross Spruce Street.

A Leavenworth Animal Control officer responded and took the tortoise to the city’s animal shelter, Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens said.

Animal Control operates as part of the Leavenworth Police Department.

“We started this social media campaign,” Kitchens said.

Photographs of the tortoise were posted on the Leavenworth Police Department’s Facebook page this morning.

Kitchens said the owner of the tortoise picked up the creature today. The owner lives in Leavenworth.

The police chief did not know the gender or name of the tortoise.
