After completing her first year in college, a Lansing High School graduate plans to spend her summer overseeing a house painting operation.

Marie Caraccilo will be doing the work as part of an internship with College Works Painting.

She said the internship is designed to equip her with skills and knowledge she needs to run her own business.

"So this summer, I'll be managing my own house painting company," Caraccilo said.

Caraccilo said she will be hiring employees and managing a budget as a branch manager for College Works Painting.

"I will actually be running my portion of the business in the Leavenworth and Lansing area and in parts of Missouri," she said.

Ahead of the summer, Caraccilo said she is marketing the business.

Caraccilo is in her freshman year at Washburn University in Topeka.

She graduated from Lansing High School last year.

Before leaving high school, Caraccilo and her younger sister won the national DECA Herff Jones Marketing Results Challenge by creating a marketing campaign to increase yearbook sales.

At Washburn, she is studying marketing and accounting and wants to minor in leadership.

Caraccilo said she was selected for the internship after a series of interviews. The final interview was with a vice president of College Works Painting.

During the summer, a portion of the money generated through the house painting operation overseen by Caraccilo will go to College Works Painting. But Caraccilo said she will be able to keep some of her profits.
