A woman was taken to the hospital after her vehicle overturned following a collision in southwest Leavenworth, a police spokesman said.

The crash was reported at 5:24 p.m. Monday at 20th and Vilas streets.

A 20-year-old Bonner Springs man was driving west on Vilas Street in a 2006 Pontiac G6 when he allegedly failed to stop at a red light. The car collided with a 2009 Lexus R35 that was traveling south on 20th Street, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

“The Lexus rolled over onto its roof,” Nicodemus said.

The driver of the Lexus vehicle was extricated by members of the Leavenworth Fire Department.

The driver, a 68-year-old Leavenworth woman, had cuts and abrasions after the crash. She was transported by Leavenworth County EMS to the University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas.

Nicodemus said the driver of the Pontiac vehicle, who was not injured in the crash, told officers his brakes were not working. He was cited by police for allegedly failing to stop for a red light and having defective brakes.
