Volunteers from two churches are preparing once again for a community outreach weekend that will include swimming, music, a movie and a massive shoe giveaway.
Members of the Engage Ministry, comprised of approximately 100 volunteers from First Southern Baptist Church in Lansing and Cavalry Baptist Church in Leavenworth, will host a free swimming party Friday night at the Wollman Aquatic Center.
The event will feature a free cookout, a free movie and live music.
The event will feature a free shoe giveaway to people in the Leavenworth and Lansing communities beginning at 6 p.m. at Wollman Park.
First Southern Baptist Church Pastor Nathan Gunter, organizer of the event, said there will be more than 500 pairs of shoes donated to people Saturday night.
The film “The Incredibles” will be shown near the main shelter at the pool beginning about 9 p.m.
The outreach event continues Saturday with a giveaway at Cavalry Baptist Church, 4451 10th Ave. The event is titled Bibles and Backpacks and will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. School-aged children will be given backpacks stocked with school items.
Volunteers also will be at the Waggin’ Tails Dog Park on the grounds of the Eisenhower VA Medical Center from 8-10 a.m. Saturday. They will be handing out water to visitors and giving out treats to the dogs.
Volunteers with the Engage Ministry also will give away slushes at the Sonic restaurant in Lansing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
The group will also host a No Cost, No Kidding car wash from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Leavenworth Co-Op on the corner of 4th Street and Eisenhower Road.
Gunter said many people offer to donate money at the different outreach events, but volunteers do not accept the offers.
“This is not a fundraiser. It’s just our gift to the community,” Gunter said. “It’s just our way to connect with people.”
Members of the Engage Ministry host three outreach events each year.
In April, they held a free pancake feed and community worship service.
They will host another free outreach event in the fall.
