On Sept. 17, 1923, North Broadway School opened its doors for the first time.
The school would serve children in Leavenworth for the next 76 years before being shuttered for decades.
But the building is getting a second life as a revitalization project is under way to convert the structure into residential living spaces.
Construction is well under way at the Broadway Lofts, 801 N. Broadway Ave.
The lofts will include large studios and one- and two-bedroom units. There will be common community lounges for socializing. There will also be a coffee bar, a grilling patio, 24-hour maintenance and a secure entrance.
Each unit will have its own laundry appliances. All units will have stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. The facility features a large parking lot.
One of the units features a spiral staircase to an upstairs bedroom.
Like most loft living spaces, the Broadway Lofts feature large windows.
“It has a very modern look with very clean lines,” said Eva Wilson, property manager for Greenamyre Rentals. “The lofts will have an industrial look, which is very popular these days.”
Lauren Jensen, development coordinator for property owner Exact Partners, said much of the interior decor at the Broadway Lofts has been left untouched and will remain, including chalk boards and cabinets with glass windows.
Some of the chalk boards rotate into hidden storage spaces.
There will be 27 units available in the two-story structure.
The cost of the units range from $495 per month to $925 per month.
Wilson said there will be an open house to showcase the lofts in the fall.
Wilson said many people like living in a loft because residents can “build relationships with neighbors.”
Wilson said there are many advantages to loft living.
“These lofts will be move-in ready,” she said. “There’s no mowing, it’s a nice neighborhood and the pricing is affordable.”
Wilson said she has already begun getting inquiries from people interested in renting a unit at the Broadway Lofts.
Construction began in December 2017 and is expected to be completed this fall.
Approximately 20 crew members have been working on the project.
Exact Partners also owns properties that have been converted into lofts, including the Carnegie Lofts and the Ben Day Lofts. The former Immaculata High School will be converted into loft living spaces as well.
