Donations are now being accepted for comfort items that will go to service men and women serving in the military overseas.

The Kansas-Missouri group associated with Military Families United will hold a Troop Packing Party Oct. 6 at VFW Post 56 in Leavenworth and VFW Post 370 in Overland Park, Kansas.

“As a nation, we get kind of lax about remembering the 1 percent who are stationed overseas,” said Diana Pitts, an organizer of the event.

Pitts said a group of about 75 people will pack approximately 100 boxes at each site stuffed with comfort items that will be mailed to active duty service men and women serving in foreign lands.

She said 29 boxes will be sent to the Military Police 15th Detachment serving overseas.

Boxes will be stocked with items such as crackers, snacks, drink mixes, razors, gum, mints, candy, beef jerky, cookies, sanitized wipes, socks, female-related items and more. Some boxes will include items for military working dogs.

“These things we take for granted,” Pitts said. “But some people can’t get them depending on where they are at.”

Pitts said that people can also donate thank you cards and words of appreciation.

“Whatever we get we will send,” Pitts said.

Several drop boxes are located in the area if people want to donate comfort items.

Donations can be dropped off at Frontier Community Credit Union on Fort Leavenworth and the business at 690 Eisenhower Road.

Donations can also be dropped off at Armed Forces Insurance, 550 Eisenhower Road, Connie’s Liquor Spot, 1820 S. 4th St., and VFW Post 56, 523 Cherokee St.

The Kansas-Missouri group will be accepting donations Thursday through Sunday at the Fort Leavenworth Commissary.

This is the second year that the Kansas-Missouri group has participated in the effort to send comfort items to members of the military. They sent 87 boxes last year.

Pitts said it costs $15.80 to mail one box. She said the group also is taking monetary donations to help defray those costs. People who want to donate money can do so by logging on to
