Many children have seen farm equipment from afar, but many may not have ever seen the big tractors and trucks up close.
They will get that chance Friday morning at Salt Creek Valley Farms in north Leavenworth.
Operators of the farm will host their second annual Touch a Farm Truck event from 9 a.m. to noon Friday.
The farm is located at 17842 Santa Fe Trail in Leavenworth. It’s about five minutes north of Fort Leavenworth.
The event is being held as part of a U-Pick event in the vegetable fields.
“It’s huge. It was our biggest day for U-Pick last year,” said Jessica Smith of Salt Creek Valley Farms. “We had a lot of military families come out last year, and probably will this year too.”
She said approximately 100 families attended the event last year.
The Touch A Farm Truck event is free and open to the public. Prices vary for the U-Pick event, depending on which vegetables are picked and how much.
Large tractors, combines, trucks and sprayers will be on display. Children are encouraged to climb on the farm equipment and play.
“It’s fun for them,” Smith said. “A lot of them have never been around machinery this big.”
Smith said there also will be a play area for children.
She said the farm bakery will be open and include rolls, scones and coffee.
