Although it has been open for business since the middle of September, a new extended stay hotel in Leavenworth held its grand opening ceremony Wednesday.

The Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for TownePlace Suites by Marriott, 1001 N. 4th St.

“We are excited to introduce the TownePlace Suites brand to the Leavenworth area,” said Diane Mayer, vice president and global brand manager. “At TownePlace Suites, we get it. We want to go above and beyond to do everything we can to make our guests feel comfortable.”

Several industry executives with the hotel attended the grand opening ceremony, including Joe Andrick, regional vice president of operations of True North Hotels, managing partner of TownePlace Suites by Marriott.

Andrick dropped a key to the front door of the hotel into a trash can, saying that it will no longer be needed “because (the door) will never be locked again.”

The hotel is owned by Ferguson Hotel Development of Liberty, Missouri.

Michael Watson, general manager of the hotel, said the occupancy rate has been about 80 percent since the hotel opened.

He said guests have included numerous wedding parties and Fort Leavenworth personnel.

The extended stay hotel is located across the street from Fort Leavenworth and 18 minutes from Kansas City International Airport.

The hotel features 87 rooms, an indoor pool, a fitness center, grilling stations, laundry facilities and more.

“Ideal for travelers who need accommodations for longer stays, this new property offers studio and one-bedroom suites with kitchenettes as well as separate living/working areas,” according to a press release. “Guests can work and relax on their own terms in modern suites that feature full kitchens with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, adjustable work spaces with built-in shelves and lighting, a large flat screen television as well as luxurious new bedding.”
