A Leavenworth man was found dead over the weekend at the scene of an apartment fire, a Fire Department official said.

Autopsy results are still pending, but it appears the man died as a result of the fire, according to Mark DeMaranville, division chief of prevention for the Leavenworth Fire Department.

The fire was reported at a duplex apartment at 11 a.m. Saturday at 948 Cheyenne St.

The fire, which was reported by a neighbor, was out when firefighters arrived. DeMaranville said firefighters believe the deceased man had attempted to put out the fire.

“It appeared to be a cooking fire in the kitchen area,” DeMaranville said.

He said the fire spread to cabinets and resulted in an estimated $20,000 in damage to the kitchen.

DeMaranville said firefighters are not sure when the fire started.

“We’re unsure of the timeline,” he said.

DeMaranville said the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office has assisted with the investigation.

“If you ever have a fire, the most important thing is just get out,” DeMaranville said.

This is the second fatality this year from house fires in Leavenworth.

In September, a woman died after she was pulled from an apartment fire on Vilas Street.
