With the final pieces now in place, the Leavenworth Military Memorial will be rededicated next week.

The ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday. The memorial is located near the main entrance to the Eisenhower VA Medical Center, 4101 S. Fourth St.

The memorial was originally dedicated in 2013 after the first phase was completed.

Diana Pitts, chairwoman of the committee that raised money for the memorial, said the final five pieces are now in place. She said the final pieces include granite pieces and a sign that provides a history of the memorial.

Pitts said the rededication ceremony will be pretty simple.

“We’ll just talk a little about the history,” she said.

Fundraising for the memorial began 10 years ago.

The first dedication ceremony for the memorial took place in 2013 on the anniversary of the death of Pitts’ son.

Pitts is a Gold Star Mother. Her son, Cpl. David Unger, was killed Oct. 17, 2006, while serving in Iraq.

Pitts said Monday’s ceremony also will include a presentation to a local veterans service organization.
