An election will take place later this year for candidates for local city offices and school boards. And several people already have filed as candidates for the Lansing City Council.

People who are interested in running this year still have plenty of time to file. The deadline is noon June 3, according to County Clerk Janet Klasinski.

“All candidates must file in the County Clerk’s Office,” said Klasinski, who is the county election officer.

She said there is a $20 filing fee for each candidate.

A primary will take place in August. The general election will take place in November.

A number of seats on local city councils and school boards are up for election this year.

Five people already have filed as candidates for the Lansing City Council.

Council member Gene Kirby has filed as a candidate for Ward 1 of the Lansing City Council. Ward 1 is located in northeast Lansing.

Kirby was appointed to his position on the City Council in 2017 following the resignation of a council member. Kirby had previously served on the council before becoming mayor in 2014.

Rick Huhn also has filed as a candidate for the Ward 1 seat.

Huhn retired last year as the chief of Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1. District No. 1 serves the city of Lansing and Delaware and High Prairie townships.

Huhn has been critical of plans by Lansing officials to have the city withdraw from the fire district.

Marcus D. Majure, who currently serves as a member of the fire district’s Board of Directors, has filed as candidate for the Lansing City Council’s Ward 2.

Ward 2 is located in southern Lansing.

Council Member Andi Pawlowski currently represents this position on the Lansing City Council. But she has not yet filed for re-election.

In Ward 3, Council member Jesse Garvey has filed for re-election. Ward 3 is located in west central Lansing.

In Ward 4, Council member Gregg Buehler has filed for re-election. Ward 4 is located in northwest Lansing.
