Area schools were closed and other activities were canceled Thursday following a winter storm that left behind ice and snow.

A first round of ice affected the area Wednesday morning, resulting in some local government offices being closed early.

More ice came during the overnight hours as well as snowfall, according to Kim Buchanan, deputy director of Leavenworth County Emergency Management.

“We didn’t really have a lot of ice,” she said.

She said the level of ice from Wednesday night’s storm ranged in Leavenworth County from a glaze to one-eighth of an inch.

She said sleet that fell Wednesday night helped provide traction on slick roadways.

The storm also produced thunder and lightning. And Buchanan said hail was reported in southern Leavenworth County.

Buchanan said she knew of no power outages in Leavenworth County associated with the storm.

No tornadic activity was reported in Leavenworth County. But Buchanan said a tornado warning was issued in the area of Springfield, Missouri.

Classes were canceled Thursday for local public schools as well as the University of Saint Mary.

Students of Lansing public schools already had been scheduled to be out of class Thursday because of parent-teacher conferences. But the conferences scheduled for Thursday were canceled, according to the school district’s website.

Lansing Superintendent Darrel Stufflebeam said parent-teacher conference days count toward the required number of hours for student school days.

He said Lansing public schools began the academic year with enough scheduled hours to allow up to five snow days. He said the district has used up four of the five days because of weather cancellations.

County offices at the Leavenworth County Courthouse did not open until noon Thursday because of weather conditions.

Fort Leavenworth had a one-hour delayed entry Thursday morning for non-essential personnel, according to a message on a Facebook page for the Army installation.

Local residents may see additional winter storms in the coming days.

There is a chance for snow Saturday night and Sunday morning in Leavenworth. And there is another chance of snow Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
