People sometimes need medical help but can’t afford it.

That’s where Saint Vincent Clinic comes in.

The clinic makes available primary care providers who treat low-income, uninsured residents in Leavenworth County.

In operation since 1986, Saint Vincent Clinic serves about 400 patients during 2,000 visits each year.

To raise money, the clinic hosts an annual fundraising event in the dead of winter.

The sixth-annual Snowflake Streak is slated for Saturday morning in downtown Leavenworth.

Numerous groups and individuals participate in the event each year. The event attracts more than 200 participants annually.

Employees of TenPenny Restaurant and Bar are once again leading the fundraising campaign.

Their team, called the TenPenny Plastered Penguins, is leading the pre-event fundraising with approximately $11,000 pledged so far.

As of Tuesday, there have been 210 pledges and more than $23,000 funds raised. The goal this year is $35,000.

Beth Bonewits, coordinator for the event, said 100 percent of the money raised at the event will pay for supplies and staff at the clinic.

Many teams, including the Plastered Penguins, will wear T-shirts and silly hats during the event.

The event does not have a registration fee but participants set individual fundraising goals.

Participants will register beginning at 8 a.m. at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St.

A half-mile fun walk will begin at 8:30 a.m.

“It’s 0.8 kilometers,” Bonewits said. “You can put that on a sticker for your car.”

A pancake breakfast will follow for all participants. The walk will be held unless there is extreme weather Saturday morning. The pancake breakfast will be held regardless of the weather.

Participants can register in advance at www.snowflakestreak.org or by sending an email to Bess.Bonewits@CaritasClinics.org
