Firefighters recently responded to a fire at the Lansing Correctional Facility.

The fire was reported at 8:19 p.m. Thursday in a cell at the prison. A prison employee suffered minor smoke inhalation, according to Todd Farley, chief of Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1.

“It was pretty much contained in the cell,” Farley said of the fire.

He said there was quite a bit of smoke throughout the area of the prison.

Prison spokesman Brett Peterson said inmates were evacuated to another area.

Farley said the fire did not take very long to extinguish. He said firefighters spent at least 90 minutes ventilating smoke and carbon monoxide out of the building.

Farley said the fire was started on purpose.
