A couple of school districts in Leavenworth County canceled classes Wednesday because of icy conditions.

And the University of Saint Mary campus in Leavenworth had a delayed opening.

Leavenworth County was placed under a winter weather advisory Tuesday night because of freezing drizzle.

Kim Buchanan, deputy director of Leavenworth County Emergency Management, said the weather conditions resulted in a glazing of ice on things such as vehicles that were parked outdoors, sidewalks and parking lots.

Classes were canceled for the Basehor-Linwood and Tonganoxie school systems, according to messages posted on the districts’ websites and social media pages.

Following Tuesday night’s freezing drizzle, light snow fell in the Leavenworth area on Wednesday.

More winter weather could be on the way. The area could see accumulating snow Saturday afternoon through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Frigid temperatures also are expected this weekend. A forecast for Leavenworth predicts a low temperature of 9 degrees Saturday night. The high Sunday is expected to be near 13 degrees, and the low Sunday night may be around -6.
