A bridge on Millwood Road in northern Leavenworth County could be closed for up to two years until the structure can be replaced, according to a county official.

The bridge, which spans across Stranger Creek, is located north of Easton. Millwood Road is designated as County Road 14.

County Administrator Mark Loughry said the 60-year-old bridge has a hole in it.

He said the bridge failure was originally reported Feb. 2. At that time, a road crew placed a plate over the hole. But the decision was made to close the bridge Feb. 6 for safety purposes.

Loughry said an engineering company evaluated the bridge, and county officials have determined the bridge should be replaced.

Loughry said it will take time to design and construct a new bridge.

During a recent meeting of the Leavenworth County Commission, Loughry said officials do not yet know the cost of the new bridge. But he said $500,000 is probably realistic.

The county has established a detour that takes drivers onto Kansas 192 Highway and through the city of Easton.
