A trial has been scheduled in a Leavenworth County case of a man who is facing a felony charge of animal cruelty.

The trial for Lemuel D. Hunter Jr. is scheduled for June 6 in Leavenworth County District Court.

Hunter, 58, is charged with felony animal cruelty for allegedly abusing a dog Feb. 19, 2018, in Leavenworth. Hunter is accused of burning the dog with a propane torch.

The trial date was selected Wednesday as Hunter appeared in court.

Hunter’s trial is scheduled as a trial to the court. This means no jury will be present and the judge will determine if the defendant is guilty or not guilty.

The trial will be presided over by District Judge Michael Gibbens.

Hunter’s attorney, Geoffrey Sonntag, believes the trial will not last longer than one-half a day.

Hunter remains free on bond.
