St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday this year. And organizers of the 36th annual Leavenworth St. Patrick’s Day Parade plan to follow the tradition of having the event on March 17.

The parade will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday in downtown Leavenworth.

“I think the people enjoy it,” said Tim Scanlon, a coordinator of the annual parade. “There’s quite a few people that come down every year.”

The parade will start one hour later than usual because it will take place on a Sunday.

As of Monday afternoon, there were about 50 entries signed up for the parade. Entry applications are due by 9 a.m. Thursday. Scanlon said some people wait until the last minute to enter a float in the parade because they want to know the weather forecast for the day of the event.

Scanlon said the parade will take place rain or shine.

“We’ve had it in the snow,” he said. “We’ve had it in the sleet. We’ve had it in the sunshine.”

A National Weather Service forecast for Leavenworth predicts Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high temperature of about 52 degrees.

The grand marshal for this year’s parade is Brother David McGinnis, a pastoral associate for the Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish in Leavenworth.

Scanlon said one of the reasons McGinnis was chosen for the honor is because of the work he does with Catholic youth.

Scanlon said the parade is organized by a committee of about 16 people.

The parade will be following its traditional route in downtown Leavenworth.

The parade will start at Fourth and Cherokee streets. The parade will proceed east on Cherokee to Esplanade Street and then turn north. At Delaware Street, the parade will turn west. At Seventh Street, the parade will turn south before heading east again on Cherokee Street. The parade will end at Fifth and Cherokee streets.

The parade lineup will begin at noon at Fourth and Walnut streets.
